Skype 5.0 for Linux Beta released with video calling and screen sharing support

Skype for Linux alpha was a huge success, but it lacked the rich features of the version running on Microsoft Windows OS. Therefore it was matter of time when they will sync all the features of Skype to Linux version. It happened now!

Skype 5.0 Beta is now available for download. It brings in all the glitter and glory including the most requested features ‘video calling’. Here is a complete list of what’s new in the new Skype for Linux.

New Features in Skype 5.0 for Linux Beta

  • Skype Credit: Calls to mobiles and landlines with Skype credit
  • Video Calling: One-to-one video calls from Linux to Skype on other platforms, but they should be running latest Skype too
  • Screen Sharing: Linux users can now view shared screens from other Skype desktop computers including Windows and Mac OS X.
  • Usability improvements: Unity launcher now shows the number of unread conversations, online contacts in contact list now include Away and Do Not Disturb statuses (of-course on Ubuntu only)

Can you upgrade from Skype 4.3 for Linux Alpha?

Unfortunately no. Since these are still in-development builds, you can’t upgrade them. Installing Skype 5.0 will not override or update Skype 4.3 alpha. Stay tuned for step-by-step instructions on how to install Skype 5.0 on your Linux computer. If you already know the method, you can download it from their official webpage.
